A material safety data sheet (MSDS) contains data regarding the properties of a specific substance, and is intended to provide workers and emergency personnel with procedures for the safe handling of a substance. A MSDS is a major component of workplace safety and product stewardship and includes information such as physical data, health effects, toxicity, storage and disposal. MSDS formats vary, depending on country and specific national requirements.

In Canada, the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) establishes requirements for MSDSs, with its primary objective to provide relevant safety and health information to Canadian workers so that they can take precautions to avoid injury, illness and premature death.
